Module 8: McElveen and Dierking Response

From this article, I really liked how it was stated that using literature, such as picture books, can plant “seeds” in students. Picture books are great resources and sometimes are not used enough within classrooms. Picture books are great for demonstration and modeling. They allow for all students to follow along with the story. After reading picture books, students can then use certain styles/techniques and create their own writing. I really liked how McElveen and Dierking mentioned, “Topics of interest to them (students) are found in many children’s literature books” (page 363). Once you grab students' attention, learning is so much easier and meaningful. Picture books are a great way to introduce something new, and from there, books can have less pictures and more context. Overall, I believe picture books are a great resource when introducing different reading topics and writing styles.
